A Lost Claus is the 24-minute Christmas-themed special episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, aired as part of season 3.

Plot[]

SPOILER: Plot details follow.

Claus-0006

Eduardo dresses himself up for Christmas.

Mac arrives at Foster's on Christmas Eve to celebrate his and Bloo's first Christmas with the rest of the residents. Everyone is decorating and/or wearing holiday attire, with one exception being Mr. Herriman, who says that there's bills to be paid. All of a sudden, Santa Claus arrives.

Santa asks Mac and Bloo what they want for Christmas, and just as they are about to tell him their wish lists, a second Santa comes in. Ultimately, after Bloo exchanges larger and larger (and more outrageous) gifts, the two Santas get into a fight; Frankie breaks them up and brings them along with the other Santas of all shapes and sorts to the office of Mr. Herriman, explaining that every year, kids get excited about Santa, so they create imaginary ones "that are about as real as my Great Aunt Fanny." Upon hearing that, Mac then has a breakdown, disbelieving that there is no such thing as Santa. Bloo, however, is convinced that Mac is wrong, so they go about trying several experiments that would logically prove Santa is real.

Mac doubts that flying reindeer can go around the earth in one night, so Bloo sends Wilt around the world in a sleigh carried by unicorns. He then sets out to disprove the theory that Santa wouldn't fit into the chimney by getting Eduardo to slide down the house's chimney. Mac and Bloo then go to the mall to sit on Santa's lap. Santa in the mall turns out to be Coco, and Mac accidentally tears off her fake beard, getting her fired from the job (which she was using to pay for a vacation home) and making her vow never to speak to him again.

When Mac and Bloo get back to the home, Ed turns out to be stuck and Wilt still hasn't returned, so Mac gets even more depressed. Madame Foster, however, informs him that all kids go through this stage sooner or later, but tells him that everything will be alright in the end. Before he goes to sleep, Mac wishes to get underwear from Santa to try and prove his existence.

Claus-0044

Bloo scares Mr. Herriman as the ghost of Bob Marley.

Meanwhile, Bloo, who is still distraught over the fact that he is only getting one Christmas present, comes up with a naughty idea: scaring the living bejeebers out of Mr. Herriman on Christmas Eve into giving everyone more gifts. In the night, Bloo dresses himself as the ghosts of Bob Marley, a Christmas present, and the robot-ghost of the future, and tells Mr. Herriman to give more than one present to everyone in the house. However, Mr. Herriman misinterprets his message, thinking that it is not to give anyone a single gift. Bloo calls Mac in a state of shock and informs him that there won't be any Christmas in the house, as Mr. Herriman discards the presents and tree.

Christmas morning comes and Mac, along with his mom and his older brother Terrence, are unwrapping presents. Mac is unhappy when none of his presents turn out to be underwear, even one that is shaped like a pair but instead turns out to be two ping pong ball shooters. Afterwards, Mac makes his way to Foster's. Just as he comes through the home's door, Wilt greets him. When asked how he was able to find his way home, Wilt explains that he was lost over Zimbabwe when all of a sudden, he was brought back to Foster's. Coco won a wrongful termination suit, filed against the mall operators and was settled, and Mac regains her friendship. Eduardo tells Mac that he was pushed down the chimney in the night. The house is filled with presents and the tree is back in place. Frankie calls the police and describes what happened, believing at last there is a Santa Claus. Madame Foster gives Mac a Christmas stocking with his name on it, one that is filled with underwear. Mac then realizes that Santa answered his wish as Madame Foster says, "I TOLD you the truth would make itself clear in time." seeing that his faith in Santa's existence is restored. Afterwards, Mac goes to find Bloo and, surely enough, Bloo received a pile of coal, which Mac calls undeniable proof that Santa is real. The house's residents then gather around the tree.

During the end credits, Mr. Herriman panics, trying to tell the ghosts that he tried to take out the presents and pleads to be spared punishment.

Trivia[]

  • Santa Claus being real in the Foster's universe can be explained through the concept of imaginary friends coming to life in itself. The reason for this is because the genuine Santa Claus is a mythical figure and is therefore the product of someone's imagination, meaning that a person or group of people have collectively imagined Santa Claus into existence who possesses all of his abilities which are recognized by contemporary culture. This would explain how Santa is able to deliver presents worldwide within a 24-hour span, possesses the resources to manufacture and mass produce brand-name toys despite living in the North Pole, and is able to fit through incredibly tight spaces despite his size. This, of course, would mean that even the real Santa Claus is an imaginary friend.
    • This rule of ontology could also apply to any and every other mythical character or creature from any given fairy tale or legend, as well as supernatural beings such as ghosts and apparitions, since all of these are products of one's imagination with the ability to bring them into the real world.
  • Duchess is much naughtier than Bloo, so she must've got more coal than him.
  • This was the last episode produced in 2005.
  • This episode reveals that Bloo isn't the only thing that keeps Mac happy; believing in Santa keeps him happy too.
  • This episode is not available in any digital store because it is under a "Special Code" (S01) rather than under a production code. Because of said code, it was listed as the final episode on HBO Max.
  • The full episode was included in Cartoon Network’s Happy Holidays from Cartoon Network YouTube live streams in 2022 and 2023.
  • This is Jambalaya's only appearance in season 3.
  • This is the third time Mac's mom is seen, the first two being "House of Bloo's" and "Duchess of Wails".
  • Frankie mentions she has a great-aunt Fanny. This could mean Madame Foster has a sister or a sister-in-law.

Cultural references[]

  • A Christmas Carol is referenced and spoofed in this episode. Bloo dresses up as 3 ghosts to scare Mr. Herriman: The ghost of Bob Marley, which is actually supposed to be Scrooge's dead partner Jacob Marley, who is doomed to wander wearing heavy chains as punishment; the Ghost of Christmas Present, which is actually a present even though the real Ghost of Christmas Present is a jolly, laughing character very similar to Santa; and the Ghost of Christmas Future, but the real Ghost of Christmas Future is depicted as a dark cloaked figure that doesn't speak. However, the equivalent of Ghost of Christmas Past was totally omitted even though 'Bob Marley' said that three ghosts are about to visit Mr. Herriman, yet there were only two after him. It is possible 'Bob Marley' counted himself as one of the three ghosts. The way Mr. Herriman takes the message from the ghosts is the complete opposite of how Ebenezer Scrooge takes his message in the original A Christmas Carol. In the novel, Scrooge becomes a changed man and he now loves Christmas, but in this episode, Mr. Herriman thinks the ‘ghosts’ were saying to let there literally be not one single present in the entire house, hence him throwing out the tree, and he now thinks that the ghosts are still haunting him, angrier than ever and he begs to be spared, whereas what they actually meant was not just one present for Bloo, who wanted more than just one.
  • One of Mac's Christmas presents is a book that appears to be titled The Art of The Powerpuff Girls.
  • When Mac is walking towards Foster's near the end, he passes by Snoopy's decorated doghouse and Charlie Brown's Christmas tree from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Goofs[]

  • Wilt says this is going to be the first Christmas at Foster's with Mac and Bloo, but this is a bit contradictory to "Go Goo Go" (which was made before this episode), where Goo is shown visiting Foster's on Christmas at one point and talks about creating an imaginary friend last May at the end of that episode. It is possible this episode takes place before Mac met Goo.
